At the end of a long hard summer we decided to take a well earned break and after over 12 years living in Spain decided that the capital Madrid was the destination. Booking in advance was definitely the way forward as thanks to Ryanair and the Spanish government subsidising residents flights we bagged a bargain at less than 30 return (almost the same as what the taxi fare from San Antonio to the airport is). One slight problem we faced was with the new Resident Certificate which has to be issued from the Town Hall, after reading they could easily be downloaded from the sanjose-ibiza.net site we left it late (the day before) almost too late! Thanks to the staff it was printed off and we arrived at the airport with 10mins to spare before boarding.
Fifty mins later touch down in Madrid and Only 45 mins after that we were at the hotel Intercontinental Madrid, a fantastic hotel in an excellent location. A walk was contemplated but after 6 months on an island the metro decision won and only 10 mins away we found ourselves in the centre of Madrid. The next few hours were spent exploring and visiting the big department stores around Gran Via area and the companies who have not yet arrived in Ibiza (mainly starbucks). After visiting several bars and at a locals suggesstion we headed to the C/de la Huerta for a fantastic tapas meal in the square before enjoy 1,2 or maybe 3 bars and a salsa club. This area could be described as Ibiza Town meets the West End, as a very old cobble street area yet with PRs tempting you into every bar!
The next day (with a hang over) we hopped on the Madrid Red Bus for a 3 hour city tour, taking in first the new part of the city (including the Bernabeu) and then the old and more beautiful parts. As we were still in Spain we decded to keep with trandition and have a little siesta before heading out to meet friends who recommended a great club in the back streets called Garamond. We opted for a table as a bottle of Absolute Vodka with all mixers only 100 and lasted all night take note Pacha, Space and friends!
Overall a great time in Madrid but glad to finally touch back down in Ibiza! After visiting Barcelona in May and Madris in October it really is easy to escape the island when a break is needed, booking in advance is definitely the way forward to ensure the best deals but even so with residents discount the prices are great.
